Caught In The Lands of Time  Part 2

Caught In The Lands of Time by Jae B Wells under her SCA pseudonym was originally published in an SCA newsletter during my son's chemo and 4 kids under 5 around 2006-2007. I used it as an escape from the real world. By re-posting it for you as a blog entry shows the growth of writing overtime. Don't worry. I cringe too when I read it. A woman who hated me petitioned to remove all fiction from the newsletter. Instead of guiding me from her standpoint as a writer, she took up arms to get rid of me.

“Caught In The Lands of Time” is a fictional continuous story that uses some truth, but does not use real people in real situations.  Tune in every Dragonflyre for a taste of the traits of knighthood, but beware of the people who make the good look good, and the bad look forever evil.

Part 2

Hot blood simultaneously pumped like a hotrod driven engine.  Liquid sweat evaporated in the air as if steaming smoke from a dry ice bucket.  Icy tears might have been shed when conjectural victors became losers, but who could tell under all that armor?  Henry stepped up onto the list field after two strangers stepped off.  He was so close to being the champion, that he could just taste it.  The taste was sweet as a tablespoon of Stevia.  Problem is, the aftertaste might affect him if Henry became to overconfident.

“There, no, there he is.” Henry whispered softly to himself as he looked at the entrance.  The first man he saw was wearing armor of what looked to be Roman style.  However the one that stepped onto the field was wearing head to toe in Japanese.  Henry did not have time or the energy to remember the time period or wonder if their persona matched.  All energy was gulped into the lungs.   What anxiety that was left was to be breathed out into the air around him.  Instincts were to officially take over every cell in his entire body.  This is what Henry lived for.

The world around him seemed to die down slowly.  His brain told him when and where to bow.  Certain people were to be honored.  The roar of the crowd brought his muscles to life as his right arm swung the sword and abruptly hit shield.  Intuition flowed through his left arm as he brought up his own shield.  “Geez, he hits with power.” Henry thought to himself.

“Get him!”  “Watch his right throw combo!”   “Yeah!  All right!”  The circle of crowd yelled here and there.  Sucking gasps flickered now and then as blow after blow was given and taken lightly.   Henry’s younger brother, Thomas, was towards the back of the meat packed crowd.  He had just returned from the nearest Porta-castles.  This tournament was a big to do in the Kingdom.  It seemed everyone hovering wanted to see who it was that made it to finals.  Thomas leaped, yelled, shouted and shook his fist in the air as if his brother could really hear him.

Time escaped from Thomas as he remembered his interesting father and mother.  Henry might have been little when their family joined the SCA, but Thomas was literally born into the SCA.  The Stout family hungered for the community and action.  It became what they ate, slept and learned.  Marie Stout loved the changes in her husband so much, she allowed Mario to sell their cars and buy an RV.  She homeschooled Henry on the road and had Thomas at the 1976 Pennsic War.  This mobile crazy life was all that Thomas knew.  It had taken Henry several years to get into it.

Thomas’s brother had enjoyed the settled life that he had lived before their father up and moved them.  Anger had been held against their parents on Henry’s part.  However, the brothers had been inseparable and had kept in touch over the years.  Thomas had been sixteen when he called his brother and told him that he needed to come quick to the hospital in Florida.  There had been a car wreck.  Marie Stout had instantly died, but Mario was clinging desperately to life as he waited for his firstborn to repent of his grudge.  Henry had barely made the last breath to tell his father that he loved him, but wanted to know one question “why?”

Thomas heard over the intercom at the nurses’ station, his father’s unsteady last breath.  “Yyyy…you’ll forgive mm…me, when you try it, my son.” The nurses at the station couldn’t keep back their pain or sorrow.  They had tears just like Thomas.

A crack on a helmet had awakened Thomas from his memories.  He looked at his brother.  It had taken Henry time to accept his father’s challenge.  There he was, fighting for another title, just like their father.  Thomas was glad that he no longer felt abandoned by his only kin he knew of.   His brother had made it farther into the tournament then he had.  Although Henry had forgiven his father, Thomas wondered if questions still drove him.

That crack hadn’t been on Henry’s head, it had been on his opponent.  Nonetheless, his opponent had attacked him in a death kill first.  The kill had been close enough to his favorite piece of homemade armor that it had hurt enough to let air out of his lungs.  Keeping his humor, Henry expressed as loud as his pain would let him utter the one word that gave it away.  “Light!”

The crowd roared with a united laughter as Henry bunched up like a baby and held onto his joining legs with both hands.  He didn’t care what the name of his victor was.  He just laughed and coughed while two of his friends had helped him off the field.  After he had watered his throat down a bit, Henry swallowed a glance at a far away tent door.  His shock was enough to make a couple of other heads turn.  There stood someone he had never met.  The whispers around him led him to question himself.  Beautiful long slightly gray hair started to feather in the fresh blowing wind.  A woman had taken off the helmet that Henry had whacked so hard.  “Well done, milady, well done.”  Henry whispered under his breath.  That moment became the gossip of the night.
