Safe Spaces or Retreat

Updated: Aug 5, 2024

Safe spaces have become a controversial topic in recent years, with some people dismissing them as unnecessary or even harmful. I used to be one of those people, thinking that safe spaces were just excuses for people to avoid uncomfortable situations and shield themselves from the real world. However, a recent experience at work has completely shifted my perspective on the importance of having a safe space to retreat to in times of distress.

Working in fast food can be a hectic and high-pressure environment, with demanding customers and strict deadlines to meet. On one particular day, things were already stressful as we were short-staffed and the lunch rush was in full swing. I was trying my best to keep up with the orders, but a new girl made a mistake that ended up getting me in trouble with my boss. He slammed his hands down on the counter in frustration, and that action triggered a deep-seated response in me that I hadn't felt in a long time.

As someone who has struggled with PTSD from past trauma, the boss's sudden outburst sent me spiraling back into a state of fear and panic. I felt as though I was being attacked, and my body reacted as if I were in imminent danger. My heart raced, my hands shook, and I couldn't focus on anything else but the overwhelming sense of dread that had consumed me.

In that moment, I realized just how important it was for me to have a safe space to retreat to in order to calm myself down and collect my thoughts. I excused myself to the restroom, where I took a few deep breaths and splashed cold water on my face. It was a simple act, but it helped me to ground myself and regain control over my emotions.

Choosing to remain calm in situations that trigger memories of abuse can be incredibly challenging, but it is essential for maintaining your mental and emotional well-being. One strategy that has helped me is to practice mindfulness and focus on the present moment rather than getting caught up in the past. By acknowledging my feelings without judgment and taking slow, deliberate breaths, I am able to center myself and prevent the situation from escalating further.

Another useful technique is to engage in self-care activities that help to soothe and comfort you in times of distress. This could be anything from listening to calming music, going for a walk in nature, or practicing relaxation exercises such as yoga or meditation. Finding what works for you and incorporating it into your daily routine can make a significant difference in how you respond to triggering situations.

Supporting each other in times of need is also crucial for creating a safe and nurturing environment. Instead of tearing each other down or looking out for only ourselves, we should strive to lift each other up and offer a helping hand when needed. By fostering a sense of community and camaraderie, we can all thrive and grow together rather than creating unnecessary chaos and harm.

It is important to remember that people who have experienced trauma deserve to be treated with compassion and understanding, not judgment or ridicule. Just as individuals with disabilities are protected and cared for, those who have dealt with trauma should be given the same level of respect and support. Everyone deserves to feel safe and valued, no matter their past experiences or struggles. Safe spaces are not just about avoiding discomfort or shielding oneself from reality; they are about creating a supportive and nurturing environment where individuals can feel safe to express themselves and seek refuge in times of distress. By recognizing the importance of having a safe space and taking proactive steps to maintain your mental and emotional well-being, you can navigate triggering situations with grace and resilience. Let us strive to support and uplift each other, so that we may all flourish and thrive in a world that is filled with kindness, compassion, and understanding.
