Sound For Picture: Usage

Updated: Jun 9, 2024

Sound For Picture: “Thoughts on the use of recorded, exterior local, ambient sound.”

The Submission Wind was my favorite. I didn’t understand why everyone hates wind. It is my most favorite sound in the world. To me, wind means life. The difficult time I had in trying to capture this sound was the cars kept passing by. You can’t hear it because I was able to catch it in between cars, but it took a few times. I also tried to record the gentle breeze. Toward the end of the submission, you can hear the heavy wind which I tried to avoid. I also recorded it several times in order to get the sound I wanted. There are certain ways to capture the different sounds that wind has. In a rain forrest, there is a number of different types of rain. So is the case in Kansas with wind. There are so many different sounds of wind. Some of the wind sounds, I cannot stand. The wind that makes it where you cannot hear yourself think is not my favorite. The gentle breeze flowing through the trees gives a sound of peace.

Geese Say Hello

The Goose submission was hard to capture because face it animals are not good sports when it comes to film. Because I have worked with geese in the past, I knew the only way to film them honking is if I was walking and crowding their space. So I did. Thus, resulting in my feet crunching on the leaves. The goose only honked once. When I first attempted it, I did what I always do around geese. I said, “Goose goose goose.” Usually it will make them honk. Then, if they don’t, then you have to crowd their bubble. Wild geese do not cooperate around humans. In order to perfect the sound, I would need tame geese to work with.

The River submission is my second favorite sound. It was by pure accident that the flute was playing in the background, but it made my day. This was the closest I could get to the water fall as the fences would allow. I guess, I could have gone on the outside of the river to capture the sound of the water without the flute.

At first I had mocked going on a walk because I used to be a farm girl. You don’t have to give me an assignment to go outdoors and enjoy nature. OMG. How wonderful of an adventure I had in capturing nature for class. I stole a few minutes to pay my respects to my Cherokee heritage. This assignment left me understanding the need of closing down streets, concentrating on particular sounds and the effort it takes in the editing and film production when it comes to controlling a set, a scene and even nature.
